ESTERO, Fla. (May 17, 2018) – Susan Hable is a little awestruck when discussing her furniture collection for Hickory Chair, humbled by its journey from factory to home and ultimately its interpretation by buyers and interior designers.

“A lot of what I do is about line and shape and I take into consideration what a designer can do with each piece,” said Hable, a fine artist by training. “The design stops with me but then it’s translated by others and takes on a whole different dimension. It becomes a new thing. Interior designers put their own spin on it.”

Inspired by the multi-disciplinary accomplishments of pre-modernists like Italian architect, furniture designer, artist and magazine editor Gio Ponti, Hable, too, crosses between mediums. As a furniture designer, she’s a sculptor working with those lines and shapes; and as a textile designer, she tends to channel her art background. Hable and her sister Katharine Hable Sweeney also design floor coverings, home accessories and fine art through their New York City-based Hable Construction. The Hables have partnered with Hickory Chair and its sister brand Maitland Smith since 2011.

Hable said she’s excited to see how the newest Hickory Chair collaboration has been interpreted by Vivian Armenti, showroom manager at Henredon Interior Design Showroom. Hable is visiting the store Tuesday, May 22, to celebrate its seventh anniversary at Miromar Design Center in Estero.

She also will talk to guests and sign copies of her book, “A Colorful Home: Create Lively Palettes for Every Room,” which will be available for purchase during the event. Henredon is also serving refreshments and light bites.

“I can’t wait to see what Vivian has done,” said Hable, whose collection introduces a contemporary aesthetic to Hickory Chair. “I love talking to different designers about how they work with my furniture. People also send me pictures showing how they’ve used a piece in their homes.”

During her Henredon visit, Hable is happy to answer questions about her inspirations and aspirations.

“I like to strip back furniture to a very simple form and create shapes I hope become iconic because they stand the test of time,” she said. “I leave a lot of room for a designer to customize it to their clients. I feel I’ve given them a canvas to really create their own look that morphs with their environment and mixes with what they already have.”

The public is invited to meet Hable May 22 during her visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Make reservations by calling Miromar Design Center at (239) 390-5111. Henredon Interior Design Showroom is located in suite 291 and also specializes in La Barge, Drexel, Pearson and Barbara Barry.
